Manual setup

Edit ~/.claude/settings.json or ~/.codex/config.toml directly. Best if you already manage dotfiles.

Only non-sensitive settings belong in version control. Keep API keys in environment variables or local secret storage, and never commit them.

Common gotchas

The mistakes people hit most often.

Can't connect, says my key is invalid

First check you're using our key (starts with sk-, not sk-ant- or OpenAI's sk-). Then check the key isn't disabled and still has balance. Finally make sure an old official login isn't overriding your env. Run /logout or delete the credentials file in ~/.claude.

Claude Code installed but requests fail

Usually ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL includes /v1 by mistake. Claude Code appends /v1/messages for you; adding /v1 yourself makes it /v1/v1/messages and 404s. Codex is the opposite. Its URL must include /v1.

Config changes not taking effect

Restart the terminal or Codex after editing configuration so environment variables reload. Then confirm model_provider / model_providers are in the ~/.codex/config.toml used by your current Codex installation.

Requests too frequent / 429

The same key sent too many requests in one minute. Wait until the RateLimit-Reset time before retrying. For sustained higher throughput, contact platform support to discuss capacity.
